Markman’s Year-End Message

1. I just realized that there are several people who are following me on here that I was not following back; people whom —if I knew they were following me— I would definitely want to follow back. SO, if we know each other and you’re following me and I’m not following you, it either means that I WAS following you and you pissed me off OR that I just didn’t know you were here, in which case - please say hello here, on MM, on FB or Twitter.

2. When I was in Law School, there were legends (or possibly urban myths) about competitive assholes who would rip relevant cases out of casebooks in the law library, so that their classmates couldn’t find them. Photographers, when you post a beautiful photo of a beautiful model but don’t tell us who she (or he) is, it looks —to me, at least— like you’re ripping cases out of the law library’s casebooks; i.e. you’re hiding her identity so the rest of us won’t get to her. My point: CREDIT YOUR MODELS. And models, the same goes for you. Are you trying to “hide” your photographers from your competition? Of course not - so why not credit your photographers?? They have earned that!

When I post a photo, I attempt, in most cases, to not only credit my models but also to link to their Tumblr, their blogs, their ModelMayhem profiles and anywhere else they can be found or want me to link - so that the rest of you can contact them and make amazing art with them too!

3. This is posted by at least one of you every day, but it bears repeating: if you reblog an artist’s work (which is very much appreciated, in most instances) give the artist and/or his/her collaborators their recognition. Include any credits that were posted with the original post.

4. I don’t know why this one even needs to be written - but it really does, so here it goes: the artists who create the imagery we all see and reblog here (and elsewhere) put a lot of time, effort, energy and thought into their work. Don’t spit on that work by attempting to retouch or re-edit their work. If you find a photo in color, leave it in color! If you see a watermark on the image, leave it alone [note: in some instances it may be a Federal Crime to remove or alter a watermark.] In any event, the point is simple: don’t mess with other people’s work!

5. To all of you: have a happy, healthy and safe New Years Eve and go into 2012 with every intent to be a better person, to make better art, to help out your fellow artists and to make 2012 better than 2011.

6. Finally, I did this a few months back and it seemed to be well-received so I’m going to give you all another list of people who have been supportive of me and my art (either in person or online) and whose Tumblrs I recommend you follow
